Location
Located in the Portland Oregon United States neighborhood of Portland, Couch Park was named after merchant John H. Couch, who sailed from Newburyport, Massachusetts in the early 1840s. He owned land from the river to NW 23rd Avenue. The park was named after him and his daughter Clementine, and was a great place to play in the good ol’ days. The park was acquired by the city in 1977. Today it’s a nice park to visit and a great place to run around in.
The park has two entrances: one on NW 4th Avenue and one on NW 5th Avenue. It is also home to a parking facility that has fixed pay stations and an attendant booth. The park has a poop bag dispenser and a dog off leash area.
Name
Located at the corner of Northwest 19th Avenue and Glisan Street, Couch Park is a city park in Portland, Oregon. It is named after American sea captain and early Portland resident John H. Couch.
The park was acquired in 1977. It was originally a 19th-century estate owned by Cicero Hunt Lewis, an early Oregon merchant prince. His estate included a greenhouse, stables, and a mansion. The estate was destroyed after the house was demolished.
The park has public restrooms, a basketball court, and an off-leash area for dogs. Couch Park was also included in the book A Bark in the Park.
A wooden play structure was constructed at the park, but it was eventually demolished after forty years of Oregon rain. The park was upgraded in order to increase accessibility and safety. Several art installations were erected at the park, including carved wood pillars by Eric Jensen and steel sculptures by David Cotter. The park also received a Nature in Neighborhoods grant from Metro. The park’s Master Plan was updated in 2003. The park has been a part of the Portland parks replacement bond, which was passed by Portland voters in 2014.
The name of the park was changed in honor of Captain John Heard Couch. He was an early Oregon resident who first came to Portland from Newburyport, Massachusetts. Off-leash dog area
Located at the intersection of Northwest 19th Avenue and Glisan Street, the off-leash dog area at Couch Park is one of 31 dog parks managed by Portland Parks & Recreation. Named after a local merchant, the park was acquired in 1977.
The off-leash area is available mornings and evenings on weekdays and all day on weekends. It has large signsposts defining the boundaries. The area is also equipped with poop bag dispensers. However, the park often has depleted poop bag supplies.
The off-leash area is adjacent to a school. The adjacent school would like better boundary markers on the west side of the off-leash area. This site is programmed heavily during weekends in the summer and after school until dark in the spring and fall.
