Arson in Mt Tabor Park

During a period of dry weather and high temperatures, a rash of fires broke out in Mt Tabor Park. The park has become a hotspot for arson. In the past week, authorities have arrested three people suspected of setting fires in the area.

The Mt Tabor Neighborhood Association organized an emergency Zoom meeting with park officials. The group estimates that there have been about thirty fires in the area during the last three months. In addition to the park, dozens of homes back up to the park.

A number of residents have expressed concern that the City’s lack of maintenance or park rangers is contributing to the problem. There are also conflicts over wood piles. A representative from the Parks department will attend the meeting.

Investigators said that three teenagers intentionally set fires in the park. Two of the men, 18-year-old Samuel Perkins and 18-year-old Malik Hares, were arrested Sunday. They were each charged with nine counts of first-degree arson. The maximum penalty for a first-degree arson is 20 years in prison.
