Located in North Portland, Overlook Park is a neighborhood oasis. On a nice day, the park will be populated by people hanging out and picnicking.

Location

Located in North Portland, Overlook Park sits atop a bluff overlooking the Willamette River and is bordered by the popular University Park, Arbor Lodge, Humboldt, and Eliot neighborhoods. The neighborhood has a variety of housing types including condos, bungalows, and Victorians, as well as Foursquare and ranch-style homes.

The quaint Overlook Park neighborhood is a hidden gem that feels a bit secluded, yet is very easy to access. Overlook is served by the Interstate Ave MAX light rail train and several bus lines. Local businesses include the wacky Alibi bar, the Fire on the Mountain dance club, and the historic Overlook House.

The Overlook Park neighborhood has a great selection of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, as well as the quality community resources like the Overlook Community Center and Bess Kaiser Hospital. The neighborhood is also home to one of the city’s best food cart pods right on Killingsworth!

Walking Trails

Overlook Park is the perfect place to catch a sunset, with views of the Fremont Bridge and downtown Portland. Grab a picnic blanket and spread out in the grass to watch the sky glow with hues of pink, orange, yellow, and red.

The park also has several walking trails, including the Wildwood Trail and the Overlook Loop. The paved Wildwood Trail travels through forest understory with larch, fir, and western hemlock trees. The Overlook Loop is wooded with Douglas fir, cedar, and big-leaf maple trees.

A wheelchair-accessible paved path descends from the Overlook Loop to a shuttle stop. The shuttle runs daily March-September and weekends November-February. The shuttle stop is across the street from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and in front of the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center.

Dog Park

Whether you’re a parent of kids fond of the playground’s climbing dome or a dog owner eager to sniff hello in the fenced off-leash area, this inclusive park has something for everyone. It offers a fun children’s playground, picnic areas, and paved paths in addition to fields and courts for baseball, soccer, softball, track, and volleyball, and a nature patch.

The view at night is pretty incredible, too. Get your twilight stroll on (ladies, keep the mace and tazer handy) and watch the lights of downtown Portland shimmer on the Fremont Bridge and Willamette River.

Picnic Shelter

There is a picnic shelter at Overlook Park that is available for rent for your special occasion. There are also tables for picnics and a playground at this park. It is a large park that has a great view of downtown Portland. On a nice day, you will find this park packed with people relaxing and catching up with their friends.

You can bring your kids to play on the playground, take Fido for a walk at the off-leash dog area or try out soccer in the field. This park is over 10 acres and offers a range of amenities including a picnic area, soccer field, volleyball court, baseball field, basketball court, and more. It is ADA-accessible as well.
