Playgrounds & Sports Facilities

Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood this park offers beautiful trails, two playground areas, wildlife, a covered pavilion and picnic area, restroom facilities, 2 creeks, paved paths around the lake, sports fields, & ADA accessibility on 15 acres. Parking is rarely a problem here as the neighborhood is large. The only drawback is there are always a lot of goose droppings, so sometimes I avoid taking my dog during certain times of the year.

Surrounding Summer Lake is 30 acres of the park featuring walking trails, footbridges over the lake, tennis courts, a baseball field, a rhododendron garden, play spaces, rentable picnic shelters, an off-leash dog park, and more. This is also a great spot for bird watching, especially for waterfowl like mallards and common mergansers. If you enjoy skating, this is the place to be in Tigard for its skate park named after former mayor Jim Griffith and featuring mini bowls, a concrete dinosaur, a rotating volcano top, street features, and a pair of large flow bowls.

Picnic Areas

If you’re looking for a place to lay out a blanket and relax, head to Summerlake City Park. It’s a lakeside park with sports courts, BBQ pits, picnic areas, and more. You can also find a rhododendron garden and walking trails around the lake.

This 30-acre park is nestled into downtown Tigard and features a lake, walking trail, rhododendron garden, play spaces, tennis courts, sports fields, and rentable picnic shelters. It’s a popular spot for locals to go for walks or spend time with friends and family. You can even catch a glimpse of waterfowl like common mergansers or American wigeons on the lake.

Another great picnic spot is Cook Park Greenbelt which features a Tuupling Butterfly Garden, sports fields, and five picnic shelters. It’s also a good spot for hiking, bird watching, and kayaking as the park is located near the Tualatin River. There are also a number of trails that you can follow through the wetlands and wooded areas made of Douglas-fir and western red cedar. This unique place is a must-see!

Off-Leash Dog Run

A popular park in North Portland, this inclusive community destination is awesome whether you’re a kid fond of the playground’s climbing dome or a teen keen on shredding at the skatepark. This park also houses a fenced off-leash dog area, fields and courts for all ball sports, and a nature patch with indigenous plant species.

This 1.7-acre off-leash dog area includes winter and summer paddocks for dogs to run, frolic, and play off-leash. There’s also a shaded seating area for owners to relax and a pet water fountain. Poop bags are not provided, so make sure you bring your own.

While you’re at the off-leash dog park, be sure to stop by Fido’s Tap House where you can enjoy 40 rotating craft beers and rescue pups just waiting for their forever homes. This area has become a hotspot for dog-friendly dining and venues. It’s no wonder this dog-loving city is a top choice for families searching for homes near parks featuring playgrounds and sports facilities, picnic areas, and an off-leash dog run.

Bird Watching

The Portland metropolitan area is an incredible spot for bird watching, from Forest Park and Sauvie Island to the many natural areas in suburban communities. The north Oregon coast is an especially good destination, where you can see huge flocks of bald eagles gather along the shoreline and watch seabirds nest in the cliffs.
